Ahmedabad ∙ Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mother Heera Ben (99) passed away. Heera Ben, who was undergoing treatment at the UN Mehta Institute of Cardiology since Wednesday, breathed her last at 3.30 am yesterday. The body was then taken to his son Pankaj Modi’s residence in Raisen village of Gandhinagar. Cremation was done at Gandhinagar crematorium at 9.30 am. Narendra Modi and his brothers performed the last rites.
The Prime Minister arrived from Delhi early in the morning and offered prayers at the feet of Amma. Then Manchal carried the mother’s body along with his brothers and carried it in the van. He also traveled in the same van till the cremation.
After tweeting that 100 years of great journey has come to an end with the death of his mother, the Prime Minister then got active in official events. He was scheduled to go to Bengal to inaugurate the Kolkata Metro, Howrah-New Jalpaigudi Vande Bharat Express, etc. He canceled his trip and performed the ceremony through video conferencing from Raj Bhavan in Gandhinagar.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, former Chief Ministers Vijay Rupani, Shankarsinh Vaghela, industrialist Gautam Adani and many others attended the funeral. Heera Ben was born on June 18, 1923 in Mehsana, North Gujarat. Her husband was the late Damodardas Moolchand Modi. Narendra Modi is the third of 6 children.
