◇ Middle East issue is the biggest issue this year… Lee and Palestinian leaders deliver speeches on the same day
This high-level week is expected to focus on three major conflicts in the international community: the war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in the Gaza Strip that is almost a year old, the war between Russia and Ukraine that has been going on for over two years, and the civil war in Sudan, Africa, where the humanitarian crisis is deepening.
In particular, as fighting between Israel and the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah intensifies following the simultaneous explosions of pagers and radios in Lebanon on the 17th and 18th, the risk of the Gaza War spreading to other Middle Eastern regions has increased.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas are scheduled to address the general debate on the same day, the 26th.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will also attend the UN General Assembly High-Level Week for the third time since the Russian invasion, and will deliver a speech in the general debate on the 25th. Prior to that, President Zelensky will attend and speak at the UN Security Council meeting on Ukraine on the 24th.
Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will attend this year’s General Assembly and speak on the 28th. Russian President Vladimir Putin has not visited the UN General Assembly in New York in person since 2015.

◇ Various diplomatic events outside the conference hall
During the UN General Assembly High-Level Week, in addition to the general debate, numerous diplomatic events are held, including official side events such as the Future Summit and bilateral meetings between heads of state.
The Future Summit is a conference that was first launched in 2021 at the suggestion of UN Secretary-General António Guterres to revive international cooperation.
At the Future Summit held in the UN General Assembly Hall on the 22nd ahead of this year’s High-Level Week, UN member states adopted the ‘Agreement for the Future’, which contains directions for resolving major issues facing the international community, by consensus (unanimous agreement) without voting.
In addition, the UN will hold high-level meetings on various agendas during the high-level week, including sea level rise (25th), nuclear disarmament (26th), and antibiotic resistance (26th).
“We are witnessing a geopolitical fragmentation and rapidly worsening conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza and Sudan,” UN Secretary-General António Guterres said at a news conference ahead of the high-level week, appealing to member states for a spirit of compromise.
◇ Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yeol to Speech at General Assembly as Representative of Korea… North Korea’s Foreign Minister Choi Son-hui Likely to Not Attend
Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Tae-yeol will be visiting New York as the representative of the Korean government during this high-level week.
Minister Cho will deliver a keynote speech at the general discussion of the General Assembly on the 27th and attend the Security Council open discussion and the Peace Building Commission ministerial meeting.
In his keynote speech at the General Assembly, Minister Cho is expected to emphasize the role of the UN and the restoration of multilateralism as the senior representative of the Korean government, which will serve as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the next two years starting this year.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Cho is also planning to hold about 20 bilateral and multilateral meetings with foreign ministers from each country attending the UN General Assembly and representatives of international organizations.
In North Korea, Ambassador to the UN Kim Song-ju is scheduled to deliver a speech on the 30th, the last day of the general discussion.
North Korean Foreign Minister Choi Son-hui is likely to not attend, so there is no possibility of a meeting between the top diplomats of the two Koreas. pan@yna.co.kr
