On the occasion of its 60th anniversary, the World Jurist Association (WJA) returns to its roots for the celebration of the World Law Congress 2023, which this year will make New York City the world capital of law with the celebration of this two-day event. days in which world leaders, including heads of state, judges, policy makers, academics, lawyers, activists and students, will debate a wide variety of current issues to which the legal community must propose solutions.

The 28th edition of the meeting will take place on July 20 and 21 at the headquarters of the United Nations and the New York City Bar Association and will have the participation of 250 panelists from all over the world to discuss a wide variety of legal issues in more than 35 round tables.

Two days of debate on the legal world

The World Law Congress will begin on the morning of July 20 with the celebration of different simultaneous round tables at the headquarters of the New York City Bar Association, which will bring together more than 250 panelists from around the world to discuss a wide variety of legal topics. throughout the day.

For its part, the closing ceremony will be held in the ECOSOC Hall of the United Nations Headquarters on July 21. During this day, the World Peace and Liberty Award to the European Commission for its commitment to promoting peace through the Law and the Rule of Law. Ursula von der Leyen, president of the institution of the European Union, will receive the award personally.

This award, described by many as the Nobel Law, is the highest recognition awarded by the World Jurist Association. It has previously been delivered to Sir Winston Churchill, Nelson Mandela, René Cassin, Felipe VI King of Spain, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and to Colombian society, received by its then president Iván Duque.

  • Luc Lavrysen (Belgium): President of the Constitutional Court of Belgium and President of the Forum of Judges for the Environment of the European Union.
  • Brian Preston (Australia): President of the New South Wales Land and Environment Tribunal.

This is a recognition that, since 1965, has been given by the World Jurist Association to recognize outstanding personalities worldwide both in the legal field and in the defense of human rights and who in the past have received prime ministers, presidents, ministers, magistrates, prosecutors, judges, academics, lawyers, heads of international organizations and prominent members of the WJA who have contributed extensively to the achievement of the organization’s goals.
