ON World Humanitarian Day, Monday (19/8), Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called for an immediate ceasefire and increased humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Trudeau stressed that humanitarian aid to the Palestinian territories, which have been devastated by Israeli attacks since the outbreak of the war on October 7, 2023, is an urgent need.

“Today, on World Humanitarian Day, we honor the heroes who risk their lives to protect the world’s most vulnerable,” he said.

Reflecting on the deadly attack 21 years ago on the United Nations (UN) headquarters in Baghdad that killed 22 humanitarian workers and injured more than 150 others, Trudeau highlighted the growing challenges facing aid efforts around the world.

“The impact of armed conflict and climate change has led to record highs in the number of people in need of humanitarian assistance,” he said.

Trudeau reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to helping those in need through partnerships with organizations such as the UN, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

Responding to the crisis in Gaza, he described the situation as a disaster. “One of the areas where humanitarian aid is most needed today is Gaza.”

Trudeau called for an urgent ceasefire and stressed the importance of releasing hostages, protecting civilians and increasing the flow of humanitarian aid across the region. (Ant/Z-2)
