Cameroon joins the globe this April 18, 2023 to observe World Heritage Day also referred to as the International Day for Monuments and Sites.
It is equally a day for Cameroon to showcase its emblematic monuments and sites with hopes of having them registered amongst UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites.
Two Cameroonian Sites Registered as UNESCO World Heritage Sites
Dja Faunal Reserve
In 1987, the Dja Faunal Reserve was the first Cameroonian site to be enlisted on the World Heritage List.
The Reserve is one of the largest and best-protected rainforests in Africa with regarding 90% of its forest, untouched.
107 species of mammals, five of which are endangered, live in the Dja Faunal Reserve.
Lobeke National Park
The Lobeke National Park was added to the World Heritage List in 2012.
This Park is a part of three national parks, located in the northwestern part of the Congo Basin, at the meeting point of Cameroon, Congo and the Central African Republic.
The Lobeke National Park therefore shares its heritage with the Dzanga-Ndoki National Park in the Central African Republic and the Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park in the Republic of Congo in what is called the Sangha Trinational.
The Sangha Trinational spans a total of 750,000 hectares and is very little affected by human activity.
Other Sites Awaiting Approval
Cameroon, referred to as Africa in miniature, still has much to show the world in relation to cultural heritage.
This is evident with a long list of monuments and sites the country has proposed for validation by UNESCO.
The Bimbia Slave Trade site is one of such, located in the outskirts of Limbe in the South West Region.
The Korup National Park is another site, beautiful to behold.
Another place to visit is the Bafut Palace with rich cultural attributes and artifacts, located in the North West Region.
The historic Campo Ma’an National Park is on the waiting list for validation as well.
Ever heard of the Mandara Mountains? They are one of the natural sites that every visitor to Northern part of Cameroon will wish to visit. Tourists testify it is a beautiful site to behold.
The widely acclaimed Waza National Park is yet to gain validation from UNESCO too.
If canoeing is your thing, then you will certainly be of the opinion that the Lobe Falls beside Kribi, should make it to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Cameroon and Monuments / Sites, a Perfect Romance
All ten Regions of Cameroon have at least a monument and touristic sites that tell a story of the past, present and even captures a vision of what the future might look like.
From the Reunification Monument in Yaounde, the capital city, to the hanging bridge in Mamfe in the South West Region, through the Menchum Falls in the Northwest Region, the Bamoun Palace in the West Region, not forgetting the Ekom Nkam Falls (the scene of the legendary Tarzan movie) of the Littoral Region, up North to the Bouba Ndjida National Park.
