Tunisia will celebrate World Hearing Day on March 3, 2024, for which the World Health Organization has chosen the slogan “Let’s make ear and hearing care a reality for all”.

The President of the Tunisian Society of ENT and Head and Neck Surgery (STORL), Olfa Ben Gamra, indicated in a statement to TAP Agency that the Society will organize, on the occasion of the celebration of the World Day of hearing, a series of activities aimed at raising awareness of the importance of early detection of hearing loss, which is constantly increasing in Tunisia, as well as around the world, according to data from the World Health Organization ( WHO).

She, on this occasion, called not to underestimate the phenomenon of hearing loss in children and the elderly and the need to rehabilitate their hearing loss, because deafness can contribute to the rapid progression of dementia and of Alzheimer’s disease.

Concerning the most important reasons leading to acute or chronic deafness, Ben Gamra said that they are mainly linked to noise pollution among young people and adults resulting from continuous and long-term exposure to noise, use of headphones, or exposure near sound amplifiers at parties or in various places.

She also underlined the importance of raising awareness of diseases linked to hearing loss which are on the increase in Tunisia, explaining in this regard, the need to measure hearing at least once a year, specifying that the normal average of hearing considered healthy is less than 20 decibels and that any person who experiences a higher level greater than 20 decibels or notices a hearing deficiency, even slight, must consult a specialist doctor to diagnose their condition and take appropriate treatment .

Ben Gamra also stressed the importance of early detection in children from birth, specifying that any language delay requires an examination and hearing control depending on the age of the child in order to obtain rehabilitation. for hearing loss, recommending, in cases of profound hearing loss, to resort to an effective solution, which is the hearing implant, to facilitate the child’s integration into their social and school environment.

The program of activities organized on the occasion of World Hearing Day from March 1 to 9, 2024, with the aim of raising citizens’ awareness of the importance of early detection and diagnosis of a number of diseases hearing problems, particularly deafness in children, includes free consultations in several public hospital-university centers and in the private sector through the provision of free hearing assessments for all age groups in addition to awareness-raising activities for parents.
