A week following the destruction of the Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine, the number of flood victims has continued to rise. Authorities on the Ukrainian-controlled side of the Kherson region reported 10 dead and 20 injured. 42 people are still missing. According to Russian information, the death toll rose from 8 to 17.
Meanwhile, more and more details regarding the extent of the disaster are becoming known. The United Nations emergency aid coordinator, Martin Griffiths, is now warning of the far-reaching consequences of the dam rupture for the whole world. “The whole area, which extends to the Black Sea and Crimea, is a breadbasket not only for Ukraine but for the whole world,” he said in an interview with the BBC.
Griffiths is therefore certain that food prices will rise: “It is almost inevitable that we will see very huge problems in harvesting and sowing for the next harvest season.” The resulting problems would most likely have a huge impact on global food security, he said.
