“It’s a social and economic catastrophe” deplores Dr. Boissin. And he weighs his words. In thirty years, the endocrinologist and medical advisor to the association of diabetics and obese people of Polynesia, notes that the number on dialysis has increased from “6 to 650 per year.”
In the eyes of the doctor, there is no doubt: the current eating habits of Polynesians put them in serious danger. The most popular refined products here are loaded with sugar, salt and fat. Like instant noodles, inexpensive and present in almost all pantries in Tahiti and its islands. More commonly called “blue soup“, this nickname refers to the little favorite, the blue packet, which contains ten grams of salt alone, while the recommended threshold is five grams per day.
“The economic situation means that Polynesians eat what they can whereas before, their food came from fishing, hunting, natural products. Now they have more refined products, much more dangerous, like blue soup, soyou, oyster sauce – these are super dangerous, super salty products…” the doctor worries.
Tax to change eating habits?
It’s difficult to get rid of it since the majority of residents have it in their cupboard…so what to do? Because at the same time, the country’s economy is also taking a hit. “Ten billion per year for hemodialysis“the doctor believes, while he”It would be enough to tax these products much more in order to generate a source of income and carry out prevention.“
He nevertheless seems reassured by the interest shown by the new Government in this cause. The Minister of Health Cédric Mercadal also stopped at the hospital screening stand this Tuesday. He intends to present, by next year, his prevention and health promotion plan, aware of the problem linked to diabetes.
Today, at the Papeete market screening stand open until 3:30 p.m., Dr Boissin also detected high blood pressure half the time. “This is the main road to stroke“, he warns. “That too is a disaster!“
The situation is deteriorating from year to year, as in all overseas territories, without the support of the Country. “It was the Papeete town hall which financed this week of screening, with the Rotary Club. Luckily we have sponsors!“Jean-Louis Boissin tells us. He advises eating less bread, rice, pasta and less frying and favoring steam cooking,”that way, everyone will be healthy!“
