Hungary at the UN:

The UN declares May 19th – on Hungarian initiative – as World Fair Play Day.

Based on the decision of the UN General Assembly on July 1, the resolution proposed by Hungary declaring May 19 as World Fair Play Day was adopted by consensus of all members, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó announced on Tuesday morning.

Success in New York

“Today began with a great Hungarian success in New York, and that in the year of the Olympic Games!” – wrote the Foreign Minister on social media. Péter Szijjártó reported that 92 member states had approved the resolution submitted by Hungary. Not only did 92 UN member states support the Hungarian initiative, including China, the USA, Germany, South Korea, Indonesia, Argentina and the UAE. “In fact, by adopting the resolution today, 92 countries have made a symbolic commitment and expressed their full support for our initiative, which strengthens the spirit of sport and values such as compliance with the rules and respect for the opponent, as well as measures against violence and doping.”

Peacemaking role

Szijjártó continued: “We still remember the peacemaking role of the Olympic Games, which no one disputes. We remember that athletes from countries at war with each other hug each other after a game in the arena or on the field. And now we want the whole world to remember!” It is therefore a great success that the negotiations led by Hungary managed to bring together such a broad coalition behind the initiative.
