Austria’s men’s table tennis team received a pleasant Christmas surprise. The ÖTTV team received a wildcard for the World Team Championships from February 16th to 25th in South Korea and thus also a chance of qualifying for the Olympic Games in Paris next year.
The Austrians missed out on direct World Cup qualification at the European Championships in Malmö in September when they were eliminated in the round of 16. As number 14 in Europe, Daniel Habesohn and Co. now received an invitation to the World Cup, the only tournament where Olympic tickets are also awarded.
All World Cup quarter-finalists qualify for Paris, the remaining starting places will be allocated among the round of 16 depending on the world rankings. The team ticket also includes two individual starting places. ÖTTV nominated Daniel Habesohn, Andreas Levenko, Robert Gardos, Maciej Kolodziejczyk and David Serdaroglu for the World Cup.
The Austrian women’s team led by Sofia Polcanova had already qualified for the World Cup.
