Dramatic finale at the World Cup Slalom in Levi: Mikaela Shiffrin wins in Finland for the seventh time. Lena Dürr makes it onto the podium once more thanks to Petra Vlhová’s mistake.

After taking second place in the first slalom on Saturday, Lena Dürr achieved another podium finish in the second race in Levi, Finland. The 32-year-old from Germering near Munich benefited from a threader from the Olympic slalom champion Petra Vlhová, who was clearly the leader following the first round.

The Slovakian was also clearly on course for victory in the second round when she got stuck on a pole in the middle section and was eliminated.

Shiffrin takes the lead in the “eternal duel”.

In addition to Lena Dürr, the American Mikaela Shiffrin benefited from Vlhová’s mistake. For nine years only Mikaela Shiffrin or Petra Vlhová have won in Levi.

Now the record World Cup winner from the USA took the lead in the small internal competition with 7:6 victories once morest her long-term rival. At the finish, Shiffrin was 0.18 seconds ahead of surprise runners-up Leona Popovic from Croatia and Lena Dürr (+ 0.30 seconds).

Dürr superhappy: “Perfect start to the season”

“A perfect start to the season,” said Dürr, delighted with the eleventh podium finish of her career – four of them in Levi alone. Even if she would have liked to have done it on her own: “It’s always a stupid feeling when you benefit from other people’s mistakes,” said Dürr, who no longer believed she would be among the top three in the final round on the battered slope: “I was surprised that I was still second at the finish. That’s why I’m super happy now with second place yesterday and third place today.”

Aicher scores his first World Cup points of the winter

In addition to Lena Dürr, as the day before, only Emma Aicher (SC Mahlstetten) qualified for the final as she came 20th in the first run. The German-Swede, who celebrates her 20th birthday on Monday (November 13th), made a mistake in the upper flat section and thus missed out on a possible better placement. In the end she finished 23rd (+2.75) – at least her first World Cup points of the winter following she was eliminated in the second round on Saturday.

“I’m happy that I made it to the finish, but I can still improve a bit in terms of driving,” said a slightly disappointed Aicher on BR television.

Hilzinger, Filser and Lipp miss the top 30

Jessica Hilzinger (SC Oberstdorf/+ 3.42), who is recovering from an injury and was eliminated in the first race, crossed the finish line in the first round this time. But there wasn’t enough time for the top 30. “I’m missing a few slalom training sessions, so I have to catch up a lot. Nevertheless, I expected more,” said Hilzinger.

Andrea Filser (SV Wildsteig/+3.33) and Eline Lipp (+4.65) also missed the second run.
