World Cup every two years and a new way of classifying the Olympic Games.

The Administration Council of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) approved this Friday the 2025-2028 international calendar and determined that the World Cups will be held every two years, coinciding with the pre-Olympic year, and 32 teams will participate in them.

“These adjustments are part of the FIVB’s ongoing efforts to streamline the international volleyball calendar,” said the body chaired by Brazilian Ary Graça.

The FIVB detailed that, from 2025, the 32 World Cup teams will be divided into eight groups of four teams. The first phase will be played by all once morest all and the first two of each group will access the next round that will be decided by direct knockouts.

As for the access phase to the World Cups, the host and the current champion will have a guaranteed place. To them are added the three best teams from each continental championship and the rest of the participants will be determined by the FIVB ranking.

The FIVB recalls that these changes are “subject to the approval of the International Olympic Committee” since their intention is to “expedite the qualification process for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games”.

To do this, it proposes that the organizer (USA), the five winners of the Continental championships, the four best teams from the 2027 World Cups that have not yet qualified and the two best in the ranking participate in Los Angeles.
