The two parties have agreed on a termination of the contract which ran until 2024. The authorities of the DFB will discuss the settlement of the succession. The consequences of this resignation for Hansi Flick’s future as coach were at first unclear.

Bierhoff arrived at the DFB in 2004, in a position that had never existed before within the federation. As the team’s manager, he, along with coach Jürgen Klinsmann, was a major contributor to the summer fairy tale at the home World Cup two years later. He created an atmosphere of renewal around the DFB squad which eventually culminated in the 2014 World Cup triumph in Brazil with Joachim Löw as manager.
