Chile, 7th in the qualifying group for the South American Zone, seized FIFA last May to challenge the Ecuadorian nationality of player Byron Castillo. The latter would actually be in possession of false documents.
For its part, Ecuador invokes confusion with his brother, Bayron Castillo, born in Colombia and now deceased. Initially, FIFA issued a negative opinion on the Chilean request.
However, the Daily Mail has carried out an investigation and affirms that the footballer was actually born in 1995 and not in 1998. In addition, audio recordings report confessions by Byron Castillo who admitted to having used a false passport and obtained a false identity, with the blessing of the Ecuadorian federation.
Faced with these new revelations, FIFA has decided to convene an appeal committee this Thursday, September 15. If the facts prove true, Ecuador might see themselves inflicting 8 defeats on the green carpet (Byron Castillo having participated in 8 meetings). Any benefit for Chile who would then climb to 4th place, synonymous with qualification for the 2022 World Cup.
