India’s one-sided victory in the first round of the World Chess Olympiad. All players won easily. India has three teams each in the Open and Women’s categories. The format of the competition is four players once morest four players from the opposing team in each round. Accordingly, six Indian teams won all four games in the first round.

In the open category, India A team defeated Zimbabwe. Malayalam player SL Narayanan defeated Mushon Emerald in 33 moves. K Sasikiran, Vidit Gujarati and Arjun Erigeisi also won easily. B team consisting of Malayalee player Nihal Sarin defeated UAE. Nihal defeated Sultan Ibrahim. D Gukesh, B Adhipan and Ronak Sadhwani also progressed.

India C team defeated South Sudan. The team consists of SP Sethuraman, Karthikeyan Murali, Abhijit Gupta and Abhimanyu Puranik. All four dominated their opponents. In the women’s category, India A team defeated Tajikistan in all four games. Koneru Hampi defeated Nadi Sida in 41 moves. R Vaishali, Tania Sachdev and Bhakti Kulkarni also defeated their opponents.
Vanthika Aggarwal, Mary Ann Gomes, Soumya Swaminathan and Divya Deshmukh of Team B won. Team C’s M Varshini Sahiti, Pratyusha Boda, PV Nandita and Vishwa Vasnawala also won. The second round match will be held today. There are 11 rounds in total. The conclusion is on August 10.
