As expected, world boxing champion Tyson Fury (33) defended his heavyweight title in what may be the last fight of his career. The Brit defeated fellow countryman Dillian Whyte by knockout in the sixth round on Saturday in front of 94,000 spectators at London’s Wembley Stadium.
Fury remains champion of the WBC association. He then reiterated his announcement that he would retire following the battle.
“First of all, I want to say that I dedicate this victory to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In his name I won this fight in my country. In my England. We are Spartans,” Fury said right following the fight BT Sport.
He said he was “overwhelmed by the support. I can’t believe 94,000 compatriots came here to watch me. I wholeheartedly thank everyone who bought a ticket and stayed up late to see this fight.”
The “Gypsy King” paid tribute to his opponent and predicted a great future for him. “Dillian is a warrior and I believe he’s going to be world champion. He’s one of the greatest and unfortunately he had to fight me tonight. You’re not dealing with a mediocre heavyweight, you’re dealing with the best man on the planet .”
Fury wants to stick to his plan of wanting to retire from active sport following the fight. “I promised my wife that following the fight once morest [Deontay] Wilder is over. But I was offered a fight at Wembley and I owed it to the fans. What a way to go.”
But Showman Fury wouldn’t be Fury if he didn’t keep a back door open: “That might have been the last curtain for the Gypsy King,” said the 33-year-old in the exuberance of emotions following the battle.
Fury celebrates 32nd win of his career
It was Fury’s 32nd win in the 33rd professional fight, with an additional draw Fury is still undefeated. Fury’s former sparring partner Whyte meanwhile suffered his third defeat in the 31st fight.
The majority of fans at Wembley Stadium were behind Fury, who was more active following a pompous walk-on show early in the fight without dominating it. When Whyte, who was just a few centimeters smaller, caught his opponent in the middle of an interrupted fight, a fierce battle ensued between the two rivals.
Referee Mark Lyson threatened to deduct points from both opponents. The fight picked up more and more speed, Fury seemed incited and kept hitting smaller ones. When the “Gypsy King” hit Whyte on the chin with an uppercut, he fell to the ground and was no longer able to fight.
Fury’s retirement announcement had caused a surprise ahead of the fight as pundits and fans had hoped for the unification fight once morest WBA, WBO and IBF world champion Alexander Usyk from Ukraine. However, Usyk must first face dethroned champion Anthony Joshua (Great Britain) for a rematch.
Fury had won the WBC belt in 2020 in the second duel with Deontay Wilder (USA). He became famous in 2015 when he surprisingly pushed WBA, IBF and WBO world champion Wladimir Klitschko off the heavyweight throne following more than eleven years without defeat. After that, Fury fell into a deep hole and made headlines with doping and drug offenses. In 2016 he gave back all his belts before making a big comeback in 2018.
