(CNN Spanish) — Alejandro “Papu” Gómez has been sanctioned, in the first instance, with two years of sports disqualification, as confirmed by Monza, his current club.
The Italian team confirmed having received a notification from FIFA with the suspension of the world champion striker with Argentina in Qatar 2022.
According to Monza, in the communication they received from FIFA they indicate that Papu Gómez was detected with terbutaline in an anti-doping test carried out before the World Cup and while he was playing for Sevilla. This drug, which acts as a bronchodilator, is prohibited among elite athletes, without prior permission, since it allows greater oxygenation while practicing sports.
The drug, says the Monza statement, was administered to the player in October 2022, involuntarily, to calm a bronchospasm crisis.
CNN contacted Sevilla to find out their position and has not yet received a response. Papu Gómez has not commented on the matter and CNN contacted his representative agent to obtain a reaction from the player.
AC Monza said that it received the notification from FIFA this Friday through the FIGC, where they indicate that the sentence once morest Gómez was handed down in the first instance by the Spanish Anti-Doping Commission. “The sentence provides for a disqualification from practicing sports for two years,” says the club’s statement.
