World Champion Bagnaia wins MotoGP season opener at Portimao

Saturday’s sprint winner was also unbeatable on his Ducati at the Grand Prix on Sunday in Portugal and won ahead of Spaniard Maverick Vinales (Aprilia) and Marco Bezzecchi (Ducati) from Italy. After 25 laps, KTM riders Brad Binder and Jack Miller crossed the finish line in sixth and seventh place.

Six-time MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez caused a moment of shock on the third lap. The 30-year-old Spaniard, who started from pole position, misjudged his Honda and collided with second-placed local hero Miguel Oliveira, who suffered a thigh injury. “Pecco” Bagnaia now leads the championship standings with 37 points ahead of Vinales (25) and Bezzecchi (16).

Spaniard Pol Espargaro of the KTM factory team GasGas was unable to take part in the race following a crash in Friday practice, as was Enea Bastianini (Ducati), who missed out following a crash in Saturday’s sprint.
