World Athletics Championships: 100-meter sweep for the USA – favorites win in the hammer throw

The United States landed a sweep in the 100m sprint at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene on Saturday (local time). Fred Kerley secured the gold medal in 9.86 seconds ahead of Marvin Bracy (9.88) and Trayvon Bromell (9.88), giving the home crowd at Hayward Field an unforgettable evening. For the third time in history, all three medals over this distance went to the USA, with Carl Lewis leading the way in 1983 and 1991 respectively.

In the final, Kerley stayed well above the 9.79s he had set in the heats when he was just 3/100 off the world best time he held for the year. The world record of 9.58 seconds set by Jamaican Usain Bolt in Berlin in 2009 was therefore not in danger on the fast track.

China’s Wang Jianan secured long jump gold in the final attempt, which he landed at 8.36m. Behind the Greek Olympic champion Miltiadis Tentoglou (8.32), the Swiss all-around fighter Simon Ehammer (8.16), who has roots in the Alpine republic thanks to his Tyrolean father, came third (8.16). Ehammer does without the decathlon in Eugene, which he wants to tackle at the open-air European Championships in Munich in a few weeks.

Gold over 10 kilometers to Ethiopia

After silver in 2019 at the World Championships in Doha and Olympic bronze in Tokyo in 2021, the Ethiopian Letesenbet Gidey won her first major title. The 24-year-old won the 10,000 m in the final sprint in the year’s best time of 30:09.94 minutes ahead of Kenya’s Hellen Obiri (30:10.02) and Margaret Kipkemboi (30:10.07).

“That was my biggest goal, it means more to me than a world record,” said Gidey. She holds the records over 5,000 m, 10,000 m and in the half marathon. It was the second closest decision in World Cup history in this discipline. Defending champion and Olympic champion Sifan Hassan (NED) finished fourth empty-handed.

Favorite win in the hammer throw

In the men’s hammer throw, Pawel Fajdek won for the fifth time in a row. The Pole, who had only managed to win a bronze medal at the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo, won with the annual world record of 81.98 m ahead of his compatriot Wojciech Nowicki (81.03) and Eivind Henriksen (NOR/80.87) . “Next year in Budapest I have the next chance”, Fajdek already looked ahead. The German discus thrower Lars Riedel (discus/not in series) also achieved five titles at world championships, six the Ukrainian pole vaulter Sergej Bubka (in series). In the shot put, favorite Chase Ealey hit it with 20.49 m, giving the USA two gold medals on the second day of the World Cup.

In the preliminary heats, world record holder Karsten Warholm confidently advanced over the 400 m hurdles in 49.34 seconds. He was recently plagued by a hamstring injury. “No pain, that’s a good sign,” he said. The overall fastest was the American Khallifa Rosser with 48.62. Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith (10.84 seconds) and Jamaican Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (10.87) presented in the women’s 100 m heats.
