Resources present in the family of Microsoft 365 and Xbox solutions offer tools so that everyone can make the most of their leisure, work or study moments.

São Paulo, May 18, 2023 ‒ World Accessibility Day, May 18, is a date to raise awareness in society about the importance of promoting inclusion and acceptanceessibility for all people, including those with disabilities and neuro divergence. Brazil is home to around 45 million people with some type of disability, according to data from the 2010 demographic census. However, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) shows that, within this group, only 28.3% of people over 14 years old are employed.

To make environments accessible and inclusive, technology becomes an ally by offering resources that enable a satisfactory and suitable experience for different profiles of people. Whether for work, study or play, inclusion is part of the solutions that are offered on Windows, Microsoft 365 or Xbox. Below are 10 tips on how to use these services to promote inclusion in various daily activities:

AT WORK, OR STUDY

  1. Turn on live captions in Teams. Live captions ensure that conversations are followed in real time, allowing people with hearing impairments to actively participate in discussions.
  2. Whenever possible, open your camera. Opening the camera during an online meeting can be extremely useful for people with hearing impairments who can lip read, allowing them to see the speaker’s mouth and better understand the conversation. This can help them to be more actively involved in the conversation and to feel more included in the meeting.
  3. Speaking of Teams, record your meetings whenever possible. Recording meetings in Microsoft Teams is a useful function for people with ADHD or neuro divergence who may have difficulty staying focused for long periods of time or remembering all the information discussed during a meeting. Thus, it is possible to review parts of the conversation that may have been missed or even share information with others who were unable to attend the meeting. Just remember to let other participants know that the meeting is being recorded.
  4. Change colors in Excel spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations can have a significant impact on the ability of people with color blindness to understand visual information. This is because color blindness is a condition in which the person has difficulty distinguishing certain colors, such as red and green. By customizing the colors used in worksheets and presentations, people with color blindness can see visual information more clearly and effectively, allowing them to better understand the information presented.
  5. Use the Accessibility Checker in Microsoft 365. Before sending your email in Outlook or sharing a Word file, Excel spreadsheet or PowerPoint presentation, run the Accessibility Checker to ensure your content is easy to read and edit for people with disabilities.
