ALGIERS – A technical workshop on the prospective assessment of future skills needs for value chains, part of the STED Project “skills for trade and economic diversification” whose implementation is entrusted to the office of the International Organization (ILO) in Algeria, was launched on Monday in Algiers.
Organized by the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security in coordination with the ILO office in Algiers, the workshop saw the participation of representatives of the sectors concerned in addition to experts in the field.
The launching ceremony of this workshop was chaired by the Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Security, Fayçal Bentaleb, accompanied by the Minister of Trade and Export Promotion, Tayeb Zitouni.
“Funded by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and provided with technical and operational support from the ILO, the STED project aims to strengthen the public employment service through prospective mechanisms relating to the needs of the labor market,” Bentaleb said at the opening of the workshop.
The minister of the sector recalled, in this wake, that his department took care to “ensure the public service in terms of mediation in the labor market”, adding that it had developed “mechanisms guaranteeing transparency, quality and efficiency in management, in particular through the processing of job offers and applications”.
He also indicated that the studies carried out within the framework of this project, at the level of certain pilot wilayas had highlighted “the know-how in the value chains of olive oil, household appliances, dates and derivatives, taking into account the export capacities available to these chains and the horizons for their development”.
In the same vein, Mr. Bentaleb said that Algeria has “more than 1,000 varieties of dates, whose production, which is done in 25 wilayas, is constantly evolving”, and that the planting of olive trees “has made progress remarkable, thanks to the increase in the area planted”, adding that “the Algerian product has won international prizes for its recognized quality”.
In turn, the Minister of Trade highlighted the importance of human resources in the development of these sectors, highlighting the State’s interest in training, and the large number of graduates who come out each year of universities and professional training centers, in different fields and specialties. For her part, the President of the General Confederation of Algerian Enterprises (CGEA), Saida Neghza, highlighted the importance of “promoting the skills of Algerian producers and industrialists, as well as the role of training in improving the performance of our companies and their competitiveness”, calling for a “qualitative leap” in the achievement of the objectives of the diversification of the national economy”.
