Workshop on Best Practices for Intellectual Property Rights Enforcement in the UAE

Abu Dhabi, October 25 / WAM / The Consumer Protection and Commercial Control Department at the Ministry of Economy, in cooperation with the United States Patent and Trademark Office and the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, organized a two-day awareness workshop on the best practices followed in the administrative enforcement of intellectual property rights.

The workshop – which aimed to raise the efficiency of regulatory agencies in the country and raise awareness of methods for detecting counterfeit and adulterated products – was attended by His Excellency Dr. Abdul Rahman Hassan Al-Muaini, Assistant Undersecretary for the Intellectual Property Sector, Ministry of Economy, and Aisha Salem Hawi, Intellectual Property Attaché for the Middle East and North Africa Region, affiliated with United States Patent and Trademark Office.

His Excellency Dr. Abdul Rahman Hassan Al-Muaini stressed that the UAE has come a long way in establishing a strong and advanced legislative system to confront all types of commercial fraud and intellectual property crimes, including laws once morest commercial fraud, consumer protection, trademarks, copyright and related rights, and commercial agencies, In addition to the Industrial Property Law, all of which contribute to strengthening the country’s pivotal position on the global trade map, ensuring the competitiveness of its national economy, and protecting consumers and owners of creative products within the country.

His Excellency said: “The Ministry of Economy, in cooperation with its partners at the local and international levels, is working to ensure the implementation of the objectives of these legislations in accordance with the best standards followed globally in this regard, ensuring that the rights of stakeholders are respected, contributes to achieving fair competition on the one hand, and works to enhance the protection of society.” On the other hand, the Emirates will be protected from the harmful effects of fraud and imitation of products, which in turn will contribute to strengthening the UAE’s position as a global destination for creativity and innovative projects.”

He pointed out that the Ministry of Economy has developed a plan to spread awareness among consumers by organizing many awareness workshops in cooperation with the public and private sectors in the country, with the aim of ensuring the dissemination of the awareness message of the necessity of combating cases of commercial fraud and counterfeit products, and protecting intellectual property rights on the broadest scale in society, in a way that contributes to In consumer protection and contributes to strengthening the culture of self-control among individuals and institutions.

He stressed that the Ministry is keen to conduct monitoring campaigns on the country’s markets on an ongoing basis, in coordination with the economic development departments, concerned municipalities, customs authorities and departments, the Federal Tax Authority, chambers of commerce and other concerned parties, with the aim of measuring the extent of compliance of sales outlets and commercial establishments with the laws in force in the country, and fining violators. These laws are part of its comprehensive regulatory plan aimed at enhancing the safe consumer environment that the country enjoys.

He pointed out that the number of inspection rounds on trademarks reached 21,298 rounds during the year 2022, resulting in 1,164 violations, while the number of inspection rounds on sectors related to intellectual property rights reached regarding 248 inspection rounds, which did not result in any violations, while the number of rounds on trademarks reached About 21,298 inspection tours resulted in 1,189 violations from the beginning of 2023 until now.

His Excellency stressed that the UAE is keen to strengthen its close partnership with global governments and international organizations, in order to confront the phenomenon of commercial fraud, and to fight intellectual property crimes of all kinds, in order to create a safe global consumer environment that supports diversity and economic prosperity for all peoples of the world, and consolidates the concept of fair competition. In the business community, and the importance of this workshop in raising awareness of the dangers of commercial fraud and intellectual property crimes on national economies, the role of governments in confronting them, in general, and the steps taken by the UAE to create a safe economic environment that stimulates investments and takes into account consumer rights in particular.

The workshop witnessed the presence of representatives of local economic departments, customs authorities, and concerned municipalities, in addition to the private sector and concerned persons.
