Works by Litvak artists will be exhibited at the Philharmonic Culture

Pianist Jevgenijus Kissinas (United Kingdom, Israel) visiting Lithuania will take part in the opening of the exhibition. J. Kissin, who is often compared to Mozart, will read his verses in Yiddish (with translation into Lithuanian).

Lithuanian culturologist and art researcher Antanas Andrijauskas, who studies the lives of Litvak artists, writes: “Four Litvaks from ethnic Lithuania – Lev Antokolski, Ilja Ginzburg, Jehuda Pen and Boris Schatz – did a great organizational job, creating the world’s first Jewish art institutions, consolidating nationally engaged Jews art forces, forming the famous Vilnius, Vitebsk and Jerusalem Bezalel strategy of art schools and consolidating the ideals of Jewish national art.

From the Grand Duchy of Lithuania – Litos – territory, a large number of artists who later became famous in the world flocked to the West. Some of them went to the centers of Germanic culture, Vienna, Munich, Berlin, others – to North and South America, Paris and the Holy Land – Palestine (now Israel).”

“Mame-lošn” the exhibition will exhibit the works of artists who created in various countries and cities: Neemija Arbitblat, Michel Kikoine, Pinchus Kremegne, Chaim Soutine, Théo Tobiasse, Ossip Zadkine created in Paris; in Berlin – Issai’jas Kulvianskis, Max Band, Lasaris Segall; USA – Zoma Baitler, William Zorach, Boris Lovet-Lorsky, Ben Shahn; those who went to Palestine – Menachem Shemi, Abel Pann, Yehezkel Streichman, Jacob Balgley.

The paintings of these artists meet for the first time in history in the native land of their authors. And it is here – in Vilnius, a place that, in the eyes of many Jews, was an unquestioned Jewish political, cultural and religious metropolis defined by the influence of Eastern Europe and the Yiddish language, called the “Jerusalem of the North”, on the opening day of the exhibition, the verses of music virtuoso Yevgenij Kissin will be heard.

Jevgenijus Kissinas will visit Lithuania at the invitation of the private company “Riverside Music”.

The owner of the collection of works exhibited in the exhibition, Samuelis Tacas, is a famous New York physiotherapist from Lithuania and the founder of the TATZ support fund. He collects paintings by Chaim Soutine (1903-1943) and other Litvak artists. S. Taco’s collection is called “Soutine and his friends”.
