The African Union on Saturday called on the government in Mali to “working on a roadmap to complete the transition process” in the country, where the prospect of elections with a view to a return to civilian power has been postponed indefinitely.
Malian Prime Minister Choguel Kokalla Maïga announced Thursday evening that elections will only be organized once the country is definitively stabilized.
In a statement, the Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, “called on the transitional authorities to work on a roadmap aimed at completing the ongoing transition process”.
Moussa Faki Mahamat also ensures “the Organization’s desire to work with the transitional authorities and all Malian stakeholders to restore constitutional order, within the prescribed deadlines, with a view to promoting lasting peace, stability and development in Mali”. The AU suspended Mali from its institutions in June 2021.
The government that took power in 2020 has carried out a strategic reorientation, breaking the old alliance with the contested former dominant power France and with the cumbersome neighbor Algeria and its political intrusions.
