The current conditions of the world, which call us more to work for brotherhood and peace, dialogue and hope. This is what Pope Francis spoke about today, Saturday, when he received a group of new ambassadors to the Holy See, also pointing to the importance of the role and work of ambassadors.

Pope Francis received today, Saturday, the ambassadors of Iceland, Bangladesh, Syria, the Gambia and Kazakhstan, on the occasion of presenting their credentials. At the beginning of his speech, the Holy Father welcomed them, asking them to convey his greetings to the leaders of their countries and to confirm his prayers for them in carrying out their high service. Pope Francis added that his thoughts go in particular to the beloved Syrian people who are still recovering from the violent earthquake that hit the country recently, amid the continuing suffering due to the armed conflict.

The Holy Father then turned to the current state of the world and said that even a superficial look can make us feel uncomfortable and frustrated. In this context, he referred, for example, to Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Myanmar, Lebanon and Jerusalem. He also spoke of Haiti continuing to suffer from a serious social, economic and humanitarian crisis. Then he stopped at the war in Ukraine and the resulting pain and death. The Pope also went on to point to the increase in forced migration, to climate changes and to the large numbers of our brothers and sisters around the world who still live in poverty due to lack of access to safe water, food, basic health services, education and decent work. There is undoubtedly a growing imbalance in the global economic system, said the Holy Father.

Then Pope Francis asked: When will we learn from history that violence, injustice and unbridled land grabs do not serve the common good? When will we learn that focusing on the good of people is always better than spending resources on producing deadly weapons? When will we learn that the social, economic and security aspects are all interrelated? When will we learn that we are one human family that can truly thrive only when all of its members are respected, cared for and able to make their unique contribution? His Holiness continued that unless we reach this awareness, we will continue to live what he calls a fragmented third world war. This is an expression that may seem disturbing to our sensitivity, said Pope Francis, and primarily to our satisfaction with the great technological and scientific developments that have been achieved or the steps achieved to confront social issues and develop international law. Although these are all commendable results, we should never be complacent, or worse, indifferent, about the current state of the world, or not enable all of our brothers and sisters to benefit from these gains and developments.

And His Holiness the Pope continued that we must also be optimistic and resolute in the belief that the human family is capable of successfully facing the challenges of our time. With this in mind, consider the services that you are called to perform as ambassadors, the Pope said to his guests. He continued, pointing out that the job of the ambassador is ancient and noble, and even Paul the Apostle spoke about it when he used the word ambassadors to describe those who proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ. In this context, the Holy Father wanted to share with his guests some reflections on the ability of ambassadors to be, by virtue of their being men and women of dialogue and builders of bridges, a source of hope that there can be common ground because we are all members of the human family, and that it is possible to avoid conflict. Or it can be resolved peacefully, hopefully peace is not an impossible dream. And Pope Francis continued that the ambassador, while continuing to faithfully serve his country, tries to put aside superficial feelings and go beyond established positions to reach acceptable solutions, and this is certainly not an easy duty, added His Holiness. He continued that the current global situation stresses even more the need for ambassadors and their colleagues to be makers of dialogue and pioneers of hope.

Then, in his speech to the new ambassadors, Pope Francis expressed his appreciation for the important role played by ambassadors, which the Holy See confirms through its diplomatic commitment at the bilateral and multilateral levels. His Holiness added that the Holy See, in keeping with its nature and its special mission, is committed to protecting the inalienable dignity of every person, and to promoting the common good and fraternity among all peoples. He added that these efforts, which do not proceed from political, commercial or military goals, are carried out through positive neutrality, not moral neutrality only, especially in the face of human suffering, and this gives the Holy See a specific position in the international community that enables it to contribute better to resolving conflicts. And on other issues.

Concluding his speech, Pope Francis expressed his confidence that the new ambassadors will have many opportunities to cooperate with the Holy See on issues of common interest. In this context, His Holiness affirmed the readiness of the Vatican City Secretariat of State and the departments and offices of the Holy See to engage in an open and sincere dialogue with them, and to cooperate for the improvement of the conditions of the human family. Then the Pope poured on everyone, their families, and those working with them, the flood of divine blessings.
