Working conditions in the 118 Delhaize franchises already in place are well respected, according to the management of the lion brand. On Friday morning, the SETCa deplored “degraded” working conditions since the franchise was put in place.
“If an employee does not agree to work on Sunday, he has the right to refuse,” notes Delhaize spokesman Roel Dekelver. “In addition, the working conditions and salaries of our employees have been maintained” since the franchise, he continues.
The complaints of the socialist union do not reflect “not the reality on the ground”, adds Roel Dekeveler. According to Delhaize, the good profitability of the franchised brands illustrates satisfaction on the part of employees. “If the stores are doing well, it’s thanks to our employees and it’s a sign that they are happy.”
On Friday morning, the SETCa reacted to comments made in various media by Delhaize CEO Xavier Piesvaux regarding the results of franchised brands. Last weekend, the director of the lion brand stated in the press that franchising had been “the right decision”and that Delhaize stores “were profitable again.”
The SETCa, for its part, looks at the situation from a different perspective, and deplores the degraded working conditions since franchising, as well as social dumping caused by the opening of stores on Sundays.
