A worker was seriously injured in the face this Monday around 9 a.m. in Celles (Faimes). The firefighters of the Hesbaye rescue zone were warned of an explosion that occurred on rue du Tumulus. In reality, the explosion occurred in a small cul-de-sac not far from there.
A worker was busy cutting a seemingly empty pipe when it exploded. The machine produced sparks which caused the explosion due to the presence of gas in the pipe, due to a phenomenon of methanization. “It’s an old pipe coming from the settling basins behind the Waremme zoning, we are told at the rescue zone. It was normally empty but contained methane residues.
The worker was badly burned in the face and transported to the university hospital center of Sart Tilman. “He was conscious during our intervention but his face was seriously burned”further specifies the relief area.
The SMUR and the ambulance of Waremme went on the spot as well as the pumper of the firefighters of Hesbaye. A Civil Protection team also intervened to determine the nature of the gas in question.
