Work to restore an ancestral home in Gaspésie

Major restoration work is underway to save the Legros house in Pointe-Saint-Pierre, an ancestral building in Gaspésie.

The house, which was built in 1890, was lifted onto a concrete foundation.

This ancestral house remains important for the Gaspé population, which bears witness to the founding era of the region. The end of the 19th century was prosperous for Gaspésie, which flourished, among other things, thanks to the commercialization of fishing.

A Rimouski company, Bédard Laroche, carried out the operation.

“With the excavation work, structural repairs, drainage, of course it might have been less expensive to destroy the house, but we would lose a Gaspé gem,” said Bédard Laroche president Vincent Bedard.

Even though the house is over 133 years old, it remains in very good condition, assures the contractor. He explained that this is partly thanks to the abundance of excellent building materials that residents enjoyed at the time, such as carpentry wood and large steel beams.

“At the time it was easier,” he said. It means that we still have solid buildings.”

Further work is planned to restore the architectural assets of the time, including the windows and the exterior cladding.
