Work in tourism should become more family-friendly

Skilled workers are also urgently needed in tourism. In order to make work in the industry more attractive, the State Secretariat for Tourism is now promoting “innovative concepts for the compatibility of family and work” with up to 200,000 euros per project.

Childcare is “a particularly challenging and urgent field of action,” said State Secretary Susanne Kraus-Winkler (ÖVP) today. Two-thirds of part-time workers in the industry are women.

Working in accommodation and gastronomy is characterized by a high proportion of women and irregular working hours. Especially away from the metropolitan areas, there are “only few childcare options” in Austria compared to other European countries, the State Secretariat of Tourism stated. The responsibility often rests with the family.

The new funding is intended to “motivate tourism regions and companies to develop innovative concepts for childcare and thus improve the framework conditions for mothers and fathers to take up a job in tourism,” said Kraus-Winkler. “In this way, we will support employees in the future who are currently only able to work part-time due to a lack of childcare options.”
