Work for Humankind North America: Empowering Volunteers to Make a Positive Impact from Anywhere

RALEIGH, NC–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Lenovo today announced the North American edition of Work For Humankind, a bold initiative that uses technology to empower volunteers to have a positive and lasting impact while working from remote locations.

The Work for Humankind Research Report reveals that nearly 90% of U.S. respondents find giving back to the community essential when “working from anywhere.” Work For Humankind North America extends the legacy started on theîle Robinson Crusoeempowering skilled people in North America to use technology for the common good and have a positive impact while working from anywhere.

In partnership with the non-profit organization, BirdLife InternationalLenovo has created a mobile technology lab and living space that will travel across Canada and the United States, collecting bird song data along the way to support wildlife protection efforts.

The mobile workspace, featuring 5G connectivity, equips volunteers to carry out their daily tasks while monitoring wildlife using fundamental data collection software in partnership with the Ornithology Laboratory of the ‘Cornell University.

The Americas are home to three of the world’s nine major migratory bird flyways, making this region critical for global biodiversity and climate change mitigation. BirdLife and its local partners have identified Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBA) in North America, where Work for Humankind can strengthen its efforts to protect flyways and the migratory species that depend on these special places. IBAs are places of the greatest importance for the conservation of the world’s birds and wildlife.

Volunteers will drive between designated IBAs and stop at wildlife refuges in South Carolina, Maryland, Delaware, New York and Ontario. The van route has been developed to visit IBAs with high priority nesting species, such as the endangered Sharp-tailed Sparrow, where data is both eagerly awaited by BirdLife International and its partners. Capturing this bird song data, along with the visual identification of birds, is crucial to conservation efforts to protect the bird species and biodiversity of each local ecosystem.

The vehicle is designed to meet the living and working needs of all volunteers, with “van life” and the highest quality workspace amenities. Volunteers will work remotely through Lenovo’s Technology Hub. The van itself will be a “smart home” with a side-mounted Lenovo Smart Tab M8 Gen 3 serving as a control panel for technology throughout the vehicle. The mobile configuration will also include an integrated Lenovo ThinkSmart camera, a ThinkSmart Bar, a ThinkPad P1 laptop and a ThinkVision P40w-20 display. Volunteers can work where it is most convenient for them.

EJ McAdams, Executive Director, Friends of BirdLife International:

“BirdLife International is thrilled to partner with Lenovo on this compelling application of the science of data collection. The data collected by these volunteers will provide important information for nature conservation in BirdLife’s Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas and inform how we work to protect bird species for the next generation. Building on the computing power of Lenovo, the van has become a tool for citizen science and research, dramatically increasing the number of data points we can capture. »

Upon completion of this initiative, Lenovo will donate the Work For Humankind van to BirdLife so that future generations of conservationists can benefit from using this mobile technology lab.
