Work continues on ‘Asia’s Longest Tunnel’ in Ladakh

India Zojila tunnel connecting Srinagar and Ladakh is under construction in Jammu and Kashmir.

About 14 km long, this tunnel will become the longest tunnel in Asia when completed. 68 billion Indian rupees are being spent on this project.

Burhan Andrabi, a senior engineer working on the project, said that the tunnel will connect Ladakh to the rest of the country.

He said that the excavation of about nine kilometers of the tunnel has been completed and the remaining work is likely to be completed in one to two years.

Burhan Andrabi said that Ladakh It is cut off from the rest of the country for four months of winter, but the tunnel will make the region accessible almost all year round.

He further said that while citizens will benefit from the tunnel, it also has defensive importance. In the context of India’s recent border tensions with China, this tunnel is also of great strategic importance.

About 100 kilometers from Srinagar, Zojila Pass is a high mountain pass in the Himalayas, located in the Kargil district of Ladakh, India.

This pass connects the Kashmir valley with the Daras and Soro valleys to its west and the Indus valley to the northeast. It is an important link between Ladakh and Kashmir Valley.
