Work begins for 2nd 100% Chinese-built cruise ship

Work on the interior and outfitting of the first locally-made cruise ship is currently underway and on schedule, they said.

A steel plate cutting ceremony for the country’s second-built cruise ship was held at the Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co on Monday, kicking off the ship’s construction.

“The start of construction of this second cruise ship fully represents the capability and strength of China’s shipbuilding industry,” said Tian Yulong, chief engineer of the Ministry of Industry and Technology. information.

Mr. Tian said the cruise industry chain is extremely long. According to him, “the development of the cruise industry will raise the standards of the modern service industry and promote the whole maritime economy”.

The second ship will not be a replica of the first, noted Zhou Qi, deputy general manager of Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding, a unit of China State Shipbuilding Corp (CSSC), the world’s largest shipbuilder.

CSSC has signed a contract with the world’s largest cruise operator, Carnival Corp, and Italy’s Fincantieri Sp A to build two cruise ships, with an option to build four more ships. The contract was signed in 2018 at the 1st China International Import Expo (CIIE).

Once the ships are built, they will be delivered to CSSC Carnival Cruise Shipping, the joint venture between CSSC and Carnival Corp. CSSC Carnival Cruise Shipping will be responsible for providing expertise in cruise management and operations.

“Today’s construction kickoff will greatly accelerate our country’s independent cruise ship design and construction,” said Yang Jincheng, general manager of CSSC.

Despite the unprecedented challenges posed by COVID-19, cruise ship research and manufacturing remains a key direction for the transition and upgrading of high-end equipment in China, and the outlook for the Chinese cruise ship market cruise ships are promising.

“The construction of the second local cruise ship represents an opportunity for us to deepen collaboration with all parties, strengthen technological innovation and improve supply chain management,” Yang added.
