The cabinet wants to have built more than 900,000 homes before 2030. Of this, 350,000 should become social rent, according to the Woonbond, which represents the interests of tenants. And not 250,000, as has now been agreed with, among others, the Association of Dutch Municipalities and the housing corporations. In addition, the union wants billions to be invested in new construction.

The Woonbond itself was also involved in the performance agreements made last year. House construction is still slow at the moment. This is partly due to the rise in interest rates, higher construction costs, the nitrogen problem and hesitant landowners.

A parliamentary debate will take place next week. In this context, the Woonbond has come up with an action plan to ensure affordable rental and owner-occupied homes. In addition to more social rent, for example, there should be a building obligation for developers who have been issued an environmental permit, but who are waiting to build.

Municipalities must also be able to expropriate land more easily. In addition, an additional 10 billion euros must be invested in new construction projects over the next five years and the position of housing associations must be enhanced.

Director of the Woonbond Zeno Winkels believes that “without additional intervention, the construction agreement seems unrealistic and for many Dutch people, finding an affordable home remains a complete utopia”.

According to him, unusual measures are now needed for the housing market. “We have to curb the market, invest heavily in truly affordable homes and reduce waiting lists.”
