wood chip toilet seat

The ecological transition will also go through the throne. Finnish company Woodio has launched a toilet seat made of composite material, the design of which is said to emit 99% fewer emissions compared to a ceramic equivalent. “It turned out that ceramic as a material is a burden on the environment and has a large carbon footprint. As a result, we have created an innovative biomaterial to replace it”, explains the team behind the project. She points out that the firing of ceramics, which reaches almost 1,500 degrees, is an energy-consuming and emission-generating phase – like producing cement, for example.

The material developed in 2017 by the founder of Woodio, Petro Lahtinen, consists of wood chips up to 80% of its volume, mainly aspen from the manufacturing region, as well as production offcuts. Polyester and plastic resins, as well as polymers – enough to counteract the “green” aspect of this seat – are also part of the ingredients. The production does not require a heat source, assures the company. In terms of appearance, the Finnish firm Pentagon design has worked on a way to bring out the roughness of the wood, which can be stained during the manufacturing process.

An almost unbreakable material

Woodio’s favorite material is waterproof and “virtually unbreakable”. Properties that have enabled the development of around fifteen bathroom accessories (sinks, bathtubs, hooks, bidets). To equip yourself with the suspended toilet seat, which required three years of research and development, count around 1,000 euros. “Wood is a calming material in the bathroom. Thanks to the high wood content of the material, the Block toilet is warm on the skin to sit on. The scratch-resistant surface of the material is easy to clean»reassures the manufacturer.
