France celebrated a 2-1 (1-0) win over Brazil in Saturday’s big game at the Women’s World Cup in Brisbane. The Swedes had previously won 5-0 (3-0) over Italy in Kelburn (New Zealand) and secured a place in the round of 16. After a solid 30 minutes from the southern Europeans, the Scandinavians took control of the pitch with two goals from set pieces. Jamaica defeated Panama 1-0 (0-0).
Amanda Ilestedt (39′) and Fridolina Rolfo (44′) scored following a corner, before the break Stina Blackstenius made it 3-0 for Sweden (45′ + 1′). With the third goal of the tournament, Ilestedt (50th) followed up following another corner and, of course, with a header soon following the restart. The final point was set by Rebecka Blomqvist (90+6).
It was Sweden’s second win in Group G following beating South Africa 2-1. Opponent on Wednesday in Hamilton is Argentina.
In Brisbane, Eugenie Le Sommer gave France the lead in the 17th minute, and Debinha equalized (58′). Star player Wendie Renard (83rd) was the match winner in the game, which was just as lively and high-class as it was completely open until the end. Substitute Marta (85th) might no longer set any decisive accents. “It was a must to win this game if we want to be in a perfect position,” said France coach Hervé Renard. “After the draw once morest Jamaica we had our backs to the wall,” said Le Sommer.
In the second game of the day in Group F, Jamaica defeated Panama 1-0 (0-0) in Perth. Captain Allison Swaby headed in from a corner kick in the 56th minute, it was the only goal of the game. In added time, the Jamaicans were denied a hand penalty.
France and Jamaica are now in the best position for promotion with four points each. They are followed by Brazil (3) and the points and goalless team from Panama. Brazil need a win in next Wednesday’s head-to-head with Jamaica to be in the knockout phase.
