Women’s health: Beyond the ‘yuck factor’ to finally study menstrual blood

A research firm wants to honor the menstrual blood on which researchers have long looked up, in the hope of improving the general health of women, despite reluctance from the medical field.

“Blood is the most commonly used bodily fluid for medical decision making. I thought to myself, “Women bleed every month. Why has no one used this blood for health purposes?”, said the Dre Sara Naseri, founder of the firm Qvin, to the BBC on Friday.

Although more than 800 million women menstruate on a daily basis, according to the researcher, she might only find one study, published in 2012, which studied the components, listing more than 385 proteins unique to blood. menstrual period, the British media reported.

But no study has yet investigated whether menstrual blood and that of the rest of the body have similarities that would allow health professionals to monitor, diagnose or follow the evolution of a medical condition, such as possibly the diabetes or cholesterol-related cardiovascular disease, through menstrual blood.

The researcher also hopes that the research will find non-invasive ways to diagnose diseases related to the female reproductive system, according to the British media.

However, there are still many taboos surrounding menstrual blood in the medical field, which would explain the lack of published research on the subject, according to Dr.re Christine Metz, professor and endometriosis researcher at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research at Northwell Health in New York.

“When we decided to collect menstrual effluent for study, several doctors told us that they might not ask their patients to do this. [Mais quand] We [avons lancé un appel sur] social networks, we have registered 6,000 people in our register. Obviously they’ve gone beyond the yuck factor,” she told the BBC.

For its part, a German laboratory would have had difficulty finding a laboratory to analyze the samples.

“We have to do everything from scratch, from the very beginning. Laboratories test samples of saliva, urine or stool, but there is simply nothing for menstrual blood,” explained Miriam Santer, co-founder of the Theblood laboratory, to the BBC.
