2023-12-28 10:18:45

Lara Gut-Behrami is also one of the top candidates for the podium places in Lienz.

Keystone

After the first run of the giant slalom in Lienz, Mikaela Shiffrin leads 63 hundredths ahead of Sara Hector and 1.03 seconds ahead of Ragnhild Mowinckel. Lara Gut-Behrami in fourth place loses 1.49 seconds.

With start number 3, Mikaela Shiffrin showed a flawless ride on the icy artificial snow in Lienz, which some riders had difficulty with. The 28-year-old American was in a league of her own and at the halfway point is well on her way to her 92nd World Cup victory, her 22nd in the giant slalom.

The previous giant slalom dominators Lara Gut-Behrami (4th) and Federica Brignone (5th) were among those defeated following the first run. The two-time season winners lost almost 1.5 and more than 1.6 seconds to Shiffrin, but are still in the fight for a podium place.

The second best Swiss woman is Michelle Gisin in 17th place. She lost 2.19 seconds to Shiffrin. Camille Rast is ranked only slightly further back (19th/+2.26). Andrea Ellenberger, 3.27 seconds behind, has to worry regarding qualifying for the second run.

  • 28.12.2023 11:31

    Janine Schmitt (SUI)

Janine Schmitt was overwhelmed by the conditions in her first giant slalom in the World Cup and barely made it to the finish on skis. The gap is enormous at over five seconds, but of course no one can take away her experience.

  • 28.12.2023 11:29

    Elisa Mörzinger (AUT)

Elisa Mörzinger loses so much in the upper part that nothing is possible at the back. The fact remains that we will only see two ÖSV drivers once more at lunchtime.

  • 28.12.2023 11:26

    Fabiana Dorigo (GER)

Fabiana Dorigo’s first appearance unfortunately ends very quickly with her elimination following a driving error.

  • 28.12.2023 11:25

    Emma Aicher (GER)

Now comes the DSV duo! Emma Aicher comes in quite well, but misses her good starting position in the middle section and ultimately falls back significantly.

  • 28.12.2023 11:24

    Stefanie Grob (SUI)

Bitter! Stefanie Grob has been on course for the top 30 for a long time, but she runs out of steam on the finish slope and falls back to 31st place.

  • 28.12.2023 11:23

    Lisa Hörhager (AUT)

At 22 years old, Lisa Hörhager is certainly not the savior for the ÖSV today. In the European Cup she was particularly impressive in the slalom, but this slope is too difficult for her.

  • 28.12.2023 11:22

    Nina Astner (AUT)

Nina Astner also clearly misses the top 30! The young Tyrolean woman was simply overwhelmed by the slopes.

  • 28.12.2023 11:15

    Elisa Platino (ITA)

The route is definitely still in good condition and offers a lot. Elisa Platino takes advantage of this with a courageous run and checks in in 20th place.

  • 28.12.2023 11:15

    Katharina Truppe (AUT)

Does Katharina Troupe save the day for the ÖSV? The 27-year-old hasn’t had any good results recently and is still having an incredibly difficult time today. The disappointment is written all over her face at the finish. Only rank 32!

  • 28.12.2023 11:12

    Mélanie Meillard (SUI)

After two more failures, Mélanie Meillard is at least coming through once more. The Swiss has her problems, but keeps pushing forward and at least comes in 24th place. That might be enough for the second round.

  • 28.12.2023 11:07

Top 30 below – Magical Shiffrin on track

The best 30 athletes have completed the first round and Mikaela Shiffrin is once once more in the lead! The ski queen from the States has outclassed the competition on a difficult slope and is on the verge of her next triumph. Only the Swedish Sara Hector in second place (+0.63 seconds) lost less than a second to Shiffrin. Third place currently goes to the Norwegian Ragnhild Wowinckel. Lara Gut-Behrami is the best Swiss woman in fourth place, 0.44 seconds behind the podium, the ÖSV team plays no role in the home race. Of course, we will continue to keep an eye on what is happening and will report back with the performances of the German-speaking athletes and any other interesting moments.

  • 28.12.2023 11:05

    A.J. Hurt (USA)

AJ Hurt starts furiously and takes two tenths off her leading compatriot Shiffrin in the first sector! But then she just conjured it up. Hurt did well, lost significantly at the end, but had his sights set on a good result in 16th place.

  • 28.12.2023 11:03

    Camille Rast (SUI)

Camille Rast has improved recently, but she also lacks the courage it would take to attack on the icy Schlossberg. 18th place is still pretty decent in the end and Rast can probably show himself once more later.

  • 28.12.2023 11:02

    Roberta Melesi (ITA)

Roberta Melesi is more reserved and holds the line. Nevertheless, she gets hit by a goal post that throws her seriously off balance. She compensates for that quite well with just one stick and checks in on 19.

  • 28.12.2023 11:00

    Estelle Alphand (SWE)

Estelle Alphand gets off to a strong start and is initially on course for the podium. But then the Swede wants too much and almost lies down in the snow. Alphand saves the run, but definitely wasted two seconds.

  • 28.12.2023 10:59

    Lara Colturi (WHITE)

Lara Colturi was strong in Killington, but mightn’t find a rhythm here and was almost eliminated twice. But she at least keeps the chance of another run open.

  • 28.12.2023 10:57

    Andrea Ellenberger (SUI)

After her fall, Andrea Ellenberger still lacks the courage to attack on this challenging slope. The Swiss will get through safely, but that will hardly be enough for the second round.

  • 28.12.2023 10:56

    Elisabeth Kappaurer (AUT)

From the ÖSV’s perspective, the result is becoming increasingly scary. After an extremely mixed run by Elisabeth Kappaurer, the Austrians are now in the last five places.

  • 28.12.2023 10:53

    Ricarda Haaser (AUT)

Ricarda Haaser is initially running quite well, but then brakes, almost falls and basically has to stop to avoid being eliminated. So of course the speed is completely lost.

  • 28.12.2023 10:51

    Julia Scheib (AUT)

Is something finally working out for the ÖSV? Julia Scheib had impressed recently in training and has a really quick swing, but she also has to do some work twice. That looks much better than her teammates, and at least she stays under two seconds. This is already causing a storm of cheers among the home crowd today.

  • 28.12.2023 10:50

    Clara Direz (FRA)

It works! Clara Direz shows that a lot is still possible here and moves up to seventh place with a very fast run! The Frenchwoman is beaming at the finish!

  • 28.12.2023 10:48

    Zrinka Ljutic (CRO)

Thanks to her very clean technique, Zrinka Ljutic gets through quite well and stays under two seconds. There is still a lot of potential for the 19-year-old to move forward in the second round.

  • 28.12.2023 10:47

    Stephanie Brunner (AUT)

This seems to be a disaster for the hosts. Stephanie Brunner also makes far too many mistakes and reaches the finish line hugely behind. Three Austrians are down so far and are in the last three places.

  • 28.12.2023 10:46

    Michelle Gisin (SUI)

Michelle Gisin has once once more impressively demonstrated her all-round abilities this winter. Here in Lienz, the Swiss aren’t really getting into the swing of things and have to keep making corrections. At the end, a good two seconds are missing.

  • 28.12.2023 10:42

    Sofia Goggia (ITA)

Sofia Goggia is slowly getting fit once more and is getting closer to her top form. The Italian is of course particularly at home in speed, but she does very well here and races into the top ten.

  • 28.12.2023 10:39

    Mina Fuerst Holtmann (NOR)

Things looked much better than for the Austrians before. Mina Fuerst Holtmann completes her program very calmly, gets through it very cleanly and still has a chance of getting on the podium in eighth place.

  • 28.12.2023 10:38

    Katharina Liensberger (AUT)

Wow! Katharina Liensberger was in a really good mood in the slalom recently, but nothing works here! At halftime she was already a whopping two seconds behind and fighting for every single goal. It even falls short of Gritsch.

  • 28.12.2023 10:36

    Franziska Gritsch (AUT)

Franziska Gritsch is the first Austrian to be on the Schlossberg! But the 26-year-old is having a hard time, is sometimes too straight and also has problems with the timing. The home fans only get to see the slowest ride of the day so far.

  • 28.12.2023 10:35

    Alice Robinson (NZL)

Hardly anyone will drive to the front here today. But the podium is definitely possible with a good ride. Alice Robinson has been in a good mood recently and confirms this with a fifth place, which gives her a chance for the second round.

  • 28.12.2023 10:33

    Paula Moltzan (USA)

Paula Moltzan does really well at first and even sets the fastest time in the first sector, but then makes a technical error that has a huge impact on the next three goals. Moltzan also loses his flow and loses a lot at the back.

  • 28.12.2023 10:31

    Maryna Gasienica Daniel (POL)

Maryna Gasienica Daniel has not yet been able to convince this season. Will your trainer’s course setting help here in Lienz? No! The Polish skier loses his skis early and loses his rhythm. She also gets almost two seconds.

  • 28.12.2023 10:29

    Thea Louise Stjernesund (NOR)

Thea Louise Stjernesund cannot emulate her compatriot and has significantly more problems with the course. She leaves a lot behind, especially at the back, and checks in seventh place.

  • 28.12.2023 10:28

    Ragnhild Mowinckel (NOR)

Ragnhild Mowinckel can certainly sneak over these icy slopes and develop speed. Like Shiffrin, the Norwegian keeps creating space and stays on track. A second is missing at the front, but there is a lot possible for Mowinckel in third place.

  • 28.12.2023 10:26

    Ana Bucik (SLO)

Ana Bucik doesn’t develop any feeling for this giant slalom in difficult external conditions. The Slovenian loses almost three seconds to Shiffrin and can only roll her eyes in disbelief at the finish.

  • 28.12.2023 10:24

    Valérie Grenier (CAN)

Valérie Grenier starts strong, but is then pushed far out several times so that she loses her speed. The Canadian fights and tries everything, but has to adjust too often to attack at the front.

  • 28.12.2023 10:22

    Lara Gut-Behrami (SUI)

And Lara Gut-Behrami? The Swiss is well connected to Shiffrin at the top, but leaves a lot behind in the middle section because she is too early on several occasions. Gut-Behrami slides more than she drives and will have nothing to do with today’s victory.

  • 28.12.2023 10:21

    Sara Hector (SWE)

Sara Hector has been getting better and better lately and is of course always something to watch out for in the giant slalom. The Swede likes icy slopes and does it much better than Brignone and Vlhová. The timing is right and Hector takes a lot of speed into the final slope. Something’s going on!

  • 28.12.2023 10:19

    Petra Vlhová (SVK)

What did Shiffrin conjure up here? Petra Vlhová is not driving optimally and has to adjust a bit, but she has already lost over a second by the halfway point! The Slovakian is having a hard time, can’t get going at all and loses over two seconds to her worst rival!

  • 28.12.2023 10:18

    Mikaela Shiffrin (USA)

Mikaela Shiffrin starts furiously once more at the top and pushes mercilessly until the third goal. The American also gets the odd blow, but she does it cleverly and gives herself more space on the demanding course. Shiffrin goes further, but is lightning fast and pulverizes the best time by more than a second and a half!

  • 28.12.2023 10:15

    Federica Brignone (ITA)

At 33 years old, Federica Brignone is currently in the form of her life. Will the Italian win her third giant slalom in a row here? Brignone also has a lot of trouble with the course and has to make several corrections, but then presses the gas once more on the finish slope and catches the last gates well. The first guide time is 1:03.45 minutes.

  • 28.12.2023 10:14

    Marta Bassino (ITA)

Let’s go! Marta Bassino opens the giant slalom in Lienz. The Italian plunges from the sunny start house onto the mostly shady slope and is just a few meters along when her inner ski slips away during one of the first turns on the icy slope and she goes into the safety net. Luckily it wasn’t a bad fall and Bassino seems to be fine.

  • 28.12.2023 10:10

    The route is clear!

Fortunately, the young Austrian forerunner was able to get up following her fall and is on her way to the valley. The route is clear once more and we can start in a few moments.

  • 28.12.2023 10:01

    delay

The start is delayed a bit because a forerunner fell and first had to be freed from the safety net.

  • 28.12.2023 09:57

    Decent conditions

This time the view of the piste offers an unusual picture, because everything around the route in Lienz is green in spring-like temperatures. However, enough snow was saved from the higher regions so that the course itself is in good condition and the drivers can have a fair race in the sunshine.

  • 28.12.2023 09:50

    Gut-Behrami leads Switzerland

Lara Gut Behrami has impressed so far in the giant slalom this winter and is leading the discipline rankings following two victories. The 32-year-old is still one of the top favorites today. Michelle Gisin recently made people sit up and take notice in France with fifth place in the Super G and sixth place in the slalom. Not much can be expected from Andrea Ellenberger on her first start since the bad fall three weeks ago. Camille Rast, Melanie Meillard, Stefanie Grob and Janine Schmitt also start for Switzerland.

  • 28.12.2023 09:43

    ÖSV is hoping for Liensberger

The hopes of the local fans in the Austrian Dolomites rest primarily on the resurgent Katharina Liensberger. The 26-year-old has narrowly missed the top ten in the giant slalom twice so far, but has already been on the podium in the slalom. Franziska Gritsch and Julia Scheib have already raced into the top ten of a giant slalom this season, and Stephanie Brunner can also be expected to achieve a good result. The ÖDV line-up is completed by Ricarda Haaser, Elisabeth Kappaurer, Katharinarupp, Nina Astner, Lisa Hörhager and Elisa Mörzinger.

  • 28.12.2023 09:38

    DSV duo there

From a German perspective, no miracles can be expected today. Emma Aicher recently raced into the top ten twice in the speed disciplines, but has only completed one giant slalom this season (16th place). For Fabiana Dorigo, it is the first World Cup start this winter.

  • 28.12.2023 09:32

    Brignone will den Hattrick

Four giant slalom races have already been held this winter. There were only two winners. The events in Sölden and Killington went to the Swiss Lara Gut-Behrami, the last two giant slaloms in Tremblant went to Federica Brignone from Italy. The two are already 100 points ahead of US superstar Mikaela Shiffrin in the discipline World Cup, who leads the overall World Cup ahead of Brignone and now wants to celebrate in the giant slalom following already three wins this season in slalom and downhill. After her success in Courchevel, Petra Vlhová is now one of the favorites.
