On Tuesday, the National Women’s Union held a dialogue session at its headquarters in Abu Dhabi titled “We work together for a safe and sustainable home for tomorrow.” Experts and practitioners in the field of sustainable development participated in the meeting, with the aim of gaining a deeper understanding Challenges and opportunities related to the role individuals play in reducing the environmental footprint of everyday practices.
The conference was organized to reflect the Emirati Women’s Day slogan “We share for tomorrow”, which was announced by Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, “Mother of the UAE”, President of the National Women’s Union and Chairman of the Supreme Council His Highness, declared Supreme Chairman of the Ministry of Motherhood and Children’s Affairs and the Family Development Foundation, confirmed the participatory approach adopted by the country since its inception.
From this perspective, Her Highness the “Mother of the Nation”‘s instructions to the National Women’s Union underline the importance of strengthening the concept of shared responsibility and integrating roles to achieve sustainable development, which requires the joint efforts of everyone, including Emirati women.
The conference provided an opportunity for women to understand the importance of environmental sustainability and how it can be applied at home through learning and knowledge exchange, from efficient use of resources to waste reduction and recycling.
Dr. Aisha Hassan Al Shehhi, Engineer from the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, spoke about the environmental benefits that sustainable home design can provide, pointing out the basic principles of designing from a structural and operational perspective without compromising comfort and luxury, and Acceptable cost.
Dr. Abu Bakr Al-Toum, media activist and founder of Mustadam, spoke about his personal experience with environmental awareness and the challenges he faces in spreading it.
Kholoud Abdullah Al Kaabi from the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority also participated in the dialogue. He explained that sustainable development is not only the responsibility of society, but also the responsibility of everyone’s daily practice.
Mona Mohammed Lardi of the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority examines the impact of individual consumer behavior on environmental sustainability, highlighting the most prominent challenges in implementing waste reduction practices.
At the meeting, participants had wonderful interactions and shared their experiences and thoughts on sustainable homes through constructive discussions and exchange of experiences, and gained valuable insights on how to integrate sustainable practices into daily life.
