QWhat do Lorelai and Rory Gilmore have in common in Gilmore GirlsAgent Dale Cooper in Twin Peaks and the merry band of Friends used to squatting Central Perk? They all drink coffee. Lots of coffee. Drink with multiple virtues, when consumed in reasonable quantities, coffee is reputed to promote concentration, aid digestion, or even prevent cancer, as evidenced by the cancer fighting food list from the American Institute for Cancer Research. But also, ensure good bone strength, especially in womenaccording to a study recently conducted by the University of Leeds and published in the Science Daily.

According to this study, drinking coffee is particularly effective in strengthening bones. Above all those of the hips, which are more prone to fractures with advancing age in women. “Hip fractures occur more frequently in women due to the accelerated loss of bone density which usually occurs after menopause”, emphasizes Dr. Zoe Watson to Stylist UK. She explains that, with menopause, “estrogen levels drop”, which “results in increased bone resorption and ultimately leads to osteoporosis”. “Osteoporotic bones are much more fragile and susceptible to breakage after a fall, hence the higher rate of hip fracture in women compared to men,” she says.

Fracture risk reduced by 4%

For several months, the team of researchers, led by James Webster, doctoral researcher at the School of Food Science and Nutrition, analyzed the diets of 26,000 women. It has thus been clearly established that “food is a protective factor in maintaining bones and muscles healthy”, and that each cup of coffee consumedwomen reduced by 4% risk of fracture of the hip.

“The findings highlight aspects of diet that may be useful tools for reducing the risk of hip fracture in women, with evidence of links between higher protein, tea and coffee intakes and a reduced risk of muscle injury and bone, can we read in the report of the study, which does not, however, specify no limit to this consumption of coffee. However, there is good news for those who do not consume coffee: the same results have been observed on women who drink tea !
