A urogynecological implant caused disabling complications for at least 80 patients who filed a complaint with the Paris prosecutor’s office. Victims describe unbearable pain.
Stabbings, pain worthy of childbirth or the feeling of having your insides “ripped out”. Three women who suffered complications following the placement of a urogynecological implant spoke to Sud-Ouest to share their ordeal.
Three patients operated on in the same clinic in Pau following organ descent had a subuteral sling or “TOT” fitted. Sometimes without even being informed.
Paula, Annabella and Maria-Céleste have experienced or are still experiencing serious complications following the installation of this device. Pain that they struggle to have recognized by the medical system, with some doctors going so far as to suggest that their suffering is only “psychological”.
80 complaints filed
The symptoms were, however, very real. “(It’s) like childbirth, as violent but every day,” Annabella confides to the regional daily, adding that she had to endure twenty urinary infections in the space of six months, all while being forced to give up his intimate life due to this unbearable pain.
“My bandage was placed too tight and I am disabled for life,” says Maria-Céleste, 70, who had surgery in 2011 and has been suffering ever since.
These three victims are not the only ones to show complications. In all, 80 complaints were filed once morest X with the Paris prosecutor’s office, as specified by the four Parisian lawyers in charge of 78 of the complainants.
A lack of information
Hélène Patte, one of the plaintiffs’ lawyers, emphasizes that these complaints do not “target anyone in particular” and specifies that “the investigation has just started.” Other victims might follow, according to the regional daily.
“This implant is subject to a moratorium in the United Kingdom, Australia, Ireland too. The polypropylene device goes under the urethra to support it. When the perineum is failing, sometimes there are so many adhesions with the other organizations that it is impossible to withdraw it”, explains the one who practices at the Paris bar.
The High Authority for Health (HAS) estimates the proportion of patients subject to complications at 2.8%, the collective of French victims estimates it rather at 10%. One of the goals of this lawsuit is to gain more transparency for women requiring this type of surgery. Patients would not have been informed regarding the potential adverse effects of these devices.
“In the event that there is 1% of adverse effects, this figure must be reported to patients before the intervention,” support the plaintiffs’ lawyers.
