Having adequate and correct knowledge about the menstrual cycle is essential to achieve the well-being of women because it allows better general health to be achieved but also allows some diseases such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome to be prevented and treated in time ( PCOS), or endometriosis, warned Dr. Carlos Maquita, a specialist in gynecology and obstetrics, as well as in the biology of human reproduction.
The doctor certified by the Mexican Council of Gynecology and Obstetrics (COMEGO), explained that the menstrual cycle is a natural process that occurs in women who are of childbearing age. “It generally occurs within a period of between 21 and 35 days (although the duration may vary), and it is in this process that a series of hormonal changes prepares the body for a possible pregnancy, which is why it is very important that couples who have the dream of having a baby are informed about it.”
Dr. Maquita Nakano, director of the Women’s Medical Institute, pointed out that the menstrual cycle is divided into several phases, namely:
I. Follicular phase: It begins on the first day of menstruation and extends until ovulation. During this phase the body releases hormones that stimulate the growth of follicles in the ovaries.
II. Ovulation: It occurs around day 14 in a regular 28-day cycle. In this phase a mature egg is released, which opens the opportunity for fertilization.
III. Luteal phase: After ovulation, the body prepares for a possible pregnancy, but if the egg is not fertilized, hormone production decreases, leading to the end of menstruation.
To express question, the also member of medical societies in Europe, the United States, Latin America and of course Mexico, added that, if alterations are detected during the menstrual cycle, one should go to a health professional and avoid home remedies. “Knowing and understanding the menstrual cycle is essential because health problems can be detected, because if the woman notices changes in the regularity, duration or intensity of the cycle, she could be dealing with health conditions that require medical attention, such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome or Endometriosis.”
And understanding the menstrual cycle can help in planning and preventing pregnancies, as well as in the search for conception. “Having a baby is a miracle, many situations must align and knowing the correct stages of the menstrual cycle is key for those who want to achieve the dream of becoming parents because the fertility window is very short,” she added.
Dr. Maquita highlighted that to have adequate information, an assessment must be carried out to have a timely diagnosis with health professionals. “Only a specialist doctor can indicate the treatment to follow, if necessary. Home remedies and advice from wives can worsen a situation that requires medication or a special procedure.”
She even recommended women keep a menstrual diary to keep track of their cycle. “This information helps you better understand your body and detect patterns and potential problems, while the records can help women identify unusual symptoms and better discuss them with their doctors.”
Menstrual health is a crucial component of women’s overall well-being and with the right knowledge, as well as the necessary resources, each woman can empower herself and take control of her reproductive health, said Dr. Maquita, after launching a call to “encourage “Conversing these topics to destigmatize the menstrual cycle and providing accessible education are critical steps toward improving menstrual health.”
