Women are increasingly affected by cancer in France

The cancer is the result of the anarchic multiplication of certain cells of the organism as defined by Santé Publique France.

First cause of mortality in men and second in women, cancer is gaining ground in France, especially in women.

In 2023number of new cases of cancerall locations combined in France, is estimated at 433 136 cas.

A previous study published by Santé Publique France reported on the state of cancer in the country.

In 2018the full name of new cases of cancer is estimated at 382 000 including 54% in men.

In the latter, it is the prostate cancer which dominates with 50,000 new cases in 2015. The lung cancer c is positioned in second place followed by the cancer colorectal (31,000 and 23,000 new cases recorded in 2018).

In women, it is cancer be you which remains the most frequent although it is the second cause of mortality of the latter behind cardiovascular diseases. 58,000 new cases of breast cancer were thus diagnosed in 2018. colorectal and lung cancers with 20,000 and 15,000 new cases respectively in 2018.

It should be noted that the evolution of mortality per cancer between 1990 and 2018 is diminution in both sexes but more pronounced in men. The Public Health France study specifies that “the gains observed are generally more marked in young adults than in older ones, except for ovarian cancer”.

Cancers that might be prevented in many cases

Still according to the same previous study published by Santé Publique France, our lifestyles are mostly responsible for certain cancers which might thus be avoided. “In 2015, it is estimated that in metropolitan France, around 41% of cancers in people over 30 were attributable to modifiable risk factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, diet, overweight and obesity, certain infectious agents, certain occupational exposures, exposure to natural and artificial ultraviolet rays… »

Women are increasingly affected

The study published in 2023 focuses on the 19 most common cancers and their evolution in France.

Cancer is increasingly affecting women. All locations combined, the incidence of cancer increased by 0.9% per year on average between 1990 and 2023 in women. For men, the rate has been almost stable since 2012 at an average of +0.3% per year between 1990 and 2023.

About breast cancer, the deadliest cancer in women, the study explains that: “In women, the slight decrease in TSM (incidence) observed for breast cancer between 2004 and 2008 did not hold up. The projections for 2023, which take into account the increase that followed, thus correspond to the highest level since 1990.

The way of life of the woman having evolved, approaching that of the men with the consumption of tobacco for example, the incidence increases considerably, particularly for lung cancer, the study points out. It should be noted that this difference in trends between the two sexes is also observed in other countries.

Good news anyway

On a more optimistic note for women’s health, it is interesting to note that overall, ” the incidence of female genital cancers is changing favorably. The DST has been steadily declining for ovarian cancers since 1990. The DST for cervical cancers has been declining since 2010.”
