Woman noticed something mysterious – it led to the disclosure of million-dollar thefts

A group of itinerant criminals from Romania have been arrested for thefts of valuable GPS equipment worth several million kroner, Nordjyllands Police informs.

The arrests took place following a collaboration between North Jutland Police and South and South Jutland Police.

This is a larger complex of cases, which for the time being includes 23 cases, and where the thefts affected farmers in North Jutland and in Central and West Jutland in the autumn of 2023.

Stolen for almost four million. DKK

The value of the stolen GPS equipment has been increased to more than DKK 3.8 million.

So far, three Romanian men aged between 35 and 39 have been arrested. One person was arrested in Sweden and subsequently handed over to the Danish police, while a Romanian man was arrested in North Jutland. In addition, a third man was arrested in Romania. He was handed over to the Italian authorities, where he was wanted. The man is awaiting extradition to Denmark.

Tip from a citizen

Police Commissioner Ulf Munch Sørensen from North Jutland Police says:

– A North Jutland woman observed a suspicious vehicle parked near a church on a late autumn evening. She noted the registration number of the car. When she later finds out that a neighbor has had a break-in – where GPS antennas and screens have been stolen from agricultural machines – she called the North Jutland Police and mentioned the registration number. And it is actually that tip that kick-starts the whole investigation.

The police commissioner highlights it as a good example that even such a small piece of information from a citizen can help the police a long way in an investigation.

– We have subsequently nominated the woman for a bounty as a thank you for the help, says Ulf Munch Sørensen.

The extensive police investigation has led to searches in Southeast Jutland and in Esbjerg, where, among other things, stolen GPS equipment was found that was to be sent to Romania.

Initially, the investigators in the two police districts were able to link the Romanian men to seven burglaries, but the further investigation led to the number of thefts growing significantly.
