Woman nominated to succeed Southgate as England manager

The England national football team is looking for a new coach to succeed Gareth Southgate in the coming period, following he announced his departure from his position yesterday, Tuesday, following the defeat to Spain in the final of the European Nations Cup “Euro 2024” and losing the title for the second time in a row.

TalkSPORT reported that “England women’s national team manager Sarina Wiegman is among the candidates to take over the England national team if the FA were to look for a coach with a proven track record of international success and an understanding of the way it works.”

Sarina Wiegman has revealed her position on her candidacy for the possibility of coaching to succeed coach Gareth Southgate in the coming period.

The Mirror newspaper published an interview with Sarina Wiegman, saying: “To be honest, I think it is inappropriate to have such a conversation.. I am very happy in my current position leading the women’s team.”

“I am disappointed with Gareth Southgate’s decision to leave, I really like him, everyone here likes him as a person and as a manager,” she added. “What he has done for England has been so inspiring, he has done his job so well for so long.”

“What he has done is something to be really proud of, and to make England very proud,” she said. “He is a lovely person and a fantastic coach, what he has done for English football is truly incredible.”

Sarina Wiegman’s contract with the England women’s team runs until 2027, while the England women’s team captain hopes to win the European Championship title in Switzerland next summer.

It is noteworthy that Gareth Southgate took over the coaching of the England national team in September 2016, and led them in 102 matches, achieving 64 victories, 20 draws, while suffering 18 defeats, and losing the European Nations Cup final.

British press reports indicate that the English Football Association has prepared a preliminary list of four names to choose one of them to coach the national team to succeed Southgate. The list includes Graham Potter, Eddie Howe, Mauricio Pochettino, and Lee Carsley.

Potter and Pochettino are not currently under contract with any club or national team, which makes the task of signing them relatively “easy” compared to Eddie Howe, the current coach of Newcastle United.

As for Lee Carsley, he also seems available to take on the task, especially since he is linked to a contract with the English Federation itself, where he currently supervises the training of the England Under-21 team.
