Woman needs blood transfusion after menstruating for 83 days

American writer Ronny Maye had to receive blood transfusions following menstruating non-stop for 83 days. In 2015, she was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and used to have heavy, irregular periods — but this time, the young woman bled for nearly three months.

The case happened in 2018, and Ronny decided to seek medical help when he got up from his desk at work and noticed a small pool of blood on the chair and on the floor. Even though he went to the bathroom to clean himself up, blood was running down his legs.

In just over an hour, the writer had already finished with a box of tampons and a pack of tampons.

During the first three hours that she stayed in the emergency room, the bed linen had to be changed a few times. She received a dose of tranexamic acid, a drug used to control bleeding, without much success.

In addition, Ronny had IV access due to dehydration and received a few liters of blood through a transfusion, enough for the doctor to think she was fine and to discharge her from the hospital.

“I knew that if I went home without tranexamic acid to control the bleeding, it would be a dangerous situation. In my mind, I would be going to possibly die,” he reports, in an interview with Insider.

The woman insisted on being under observation at the hospital, and during the weekend she was hospitalized, she had several panic attacks. She developed anemia, her hemoglobin levels dropped and, due to dehydration, she was kept on an IV, causing her veins to collapse.

After examinations, the young woman was diagnosed with uterine myoma and endometriosis. She had to have a dilation and curettage exam to remove part of the lining of the uterus.

Additionally, Ronny has had an intrauterine device (IUD) fitted to regulate her periods and luckily has not experienced another menstrual cycle like this.
