Jahanara Khatoon was on her way to a health center with her family following their village was flooded. However, the baby might not wait.

The 25-year-old was helped by health personnel who traveled to flood-affected villages in the north-eastern state of Assam.

– I am very happy. My wife wanted a boy, but Allah has given me a girl, says Khatoon’s husband.

46 people have lost their lives in Assam since mid-May. The state is particularly hard hit by large amounts of water, landslides and floods.

More than 25,000 people are temporarily housed in schools, sports arenas and other public buildings following being evacuated from villages.

About 2,800 villages in the state are under water, according to local emergency services.

At least ten deaths have also been reported in the states of Sikkim, Nagaland and Manipur. Most of them are due to collapsed houses or drownings.

In the neighboring country of Bangladesh, at least 1.8 million people are affected by the flood, according to the country’s emergency authorities. They also warn that the water will rise further in the next three days.

The monsoon season in Southeast Asia accounts for approximately 70–80 percent of the region’s annual rainfall.
