Woman doctor killed after gang-rape, blames Modi government for saving accused – World

The protests that started after the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in India have spread to several cities. Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi accused government officials of protecting the accused instead of punishing them. Meanwhile, doctors and paramedic staff demanded better and safer conditions, claiming that it was a gang-rape and the police are hiding the facts due to some reasons.

It should be noted that on August 9, a 31-year-old trainee doctor was murdered after being raped and a police volunteer was also arrested for the crime and the police handed over the case to federal investigators after a court order.

According to the foreign news agency ‘AFP’, police said that hundreds of people rioted on the campus of a medical college in eastern India, attacked vehicles and vandalized patient wards.

Police did not identify who was behind the riot, but media reports said several police officers were injured.

Government hospitals in several Indian cities have suspended non-emergency medical services as protesters demanded justice, claiming it was a case of gang-rape and that more people were involved.

The Indian Medical Association, the largest body of medical professionals, said it would impose a nationwide shutdown of most medical services except for emergencies for 24 hours from Saturday morning.

The message on X said that “Doctors, especially women in this field, are victims of violence. It is the responsibility of the authorities to provide security for doctors in hospitals and campuses.”

It should be noted that according to the National Crime Records Bureau, 31,516 cases of rape were reported by the police in India in 2022, which is 20 percent more than in 2021.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned atrocities against women in the country. He said that there is anger against him in the country, I can feel that anger.

Opposition Congress Party leader Rahul Gandhi said in a statement that some state government officials have tried to protect the accused instead of punishing them.
