WKÖ-Head: Shortening work hours as a response to a labor shortage is not the solution

2023-11-19 13:48:04

The blanket demand for “less work” should be understood as an attack on our prosperity.

Vienna (OTS) “In a phase in which domestic companies are confronted with a widespread labor shortage, it is worrying to hear that some people want to reduce work across the board. There seems to be a complete lack of understanding for the numerous companies that have to struggle with a labor shortage “, says Karlheinz Kopf, Secretary General of the Austrian Chamber of Commerce (WKÖ), astonished by today’s statements in the press hour.

Austrian companies are already confronted with a labor shortage, which is reflected in the over 200,000 vacancies. Due to demographic developments, this situation will continue to worsen.

The Secretary General appeals for a prudent approach: “The glaring labor shortage, which is exacerbated by demographic change, demands more work rather than less. “All actors should be aware of this by now,” says Kopf.

From the point of view of the economy, what is needed is measures that effectively counteract the labor shortage: a comprehensive expansion of child care, a reduction in the part-time quota, a reduction in non-wage labor costs, continuing to work without paying taxes following reaching retirement age, more tax-exempt overtime and increased skilled immigration from third countries.
