Without pedals or saddle, this bicycle concept blurs the boundaries between walking and cycling

The Fliz is a bicycle concept that is unlike any other on the market, since it is without pedals or saddle. It is inspired by the first bicycle ever made – the “laufmaschine” – by German Baron Karl Von Drais in 1817.

In 1818, Karl Drais invented the Laufmaschine (running machine) which worked without pedals. This machine is part of the category of velocipedes, defined as a “bicycle operated by pushing the feet on the ground”. In 2013, a team of German designers began by analyzing this machine and thinking regarding how its design might be refined. This results in Fliz, a name derived from “flitzen”, which means “to run or rush”. Without pedals, without gears and without a saddle, can this concept be considered a real bicycle?

This Pedalless Bike Takes Cycling to a Whole New Level

Classic bikes have followed the same formula for a century. Indeed, the basic configuration consists of two wheels, one of which is connected to pedals by a chain. Fliz’s concept bike breaks with this idea. Like a resurgence from the past, the Fliz bicycle harks back to a time when bicycles were not yet designed with all the efficiency and convenience of pedals and chain.

The main difference between the Fliz and the Laufmaschine lies in its design. In fact, without saddle or pedals, this concept bike is characterized by a lightweight frame. The latter uses a harness to suspend the cyclist between the wheels. The frame itself is made from a laminate of fiberglass and carbon, making it very light. Furthermore, the electric yellow color gives the bike an elegant appearance. It makes it look like a bee is buzzing around him.

The harness system allows riders to attach themselves to the frame. It was designed to meet specific needs: comfort and practicality. In fact, it includes a 5-point belt system that replaces the traditional seat. The belt reduces pressure in the groin, distributes body weight and allows body position to be adjusted. The Fliz is suitable for users measuring approximately 1,85 m, while the harness is custom designed for each user.

Fliz : chow does this bike work without pedals?

To set the machine in motion, the cyclist must run or coast on descents. The harness system holds the frame once morest the user’s body while running. This allows it to reach sufficient speed. Once he has reached a good speed, he can put your feet on the rear wheel. And he can use the handlebars to steer himself. Throughout the journey, the user leans forward. He rests his hands on the handlebars, head peering through the front of the fiberglass and carbon frame.

The Fliz also has other functional aspects. This is because wheels allow users to move at speeds greater than walking or running. When traveling at moderate speeds, cyclists may place their legs on the treads located on the rear wheel. Which allows you to relax following the legs have propelled the bike. The overall design of the Fliz also offers many advantages. Thanks to that aerodynamic shape, cyclists can easily weave between pedestrians in “crowded urban spaces”.

This pedal-less bike concept is sure to turn heads. However, it should be noted that the Flizs was not designed to replace electric or conventional bicycles. It aims to provide a healthy transportation alternative and environmentally friendly for crowded urban spaces. Their goal was to revive Drais’ design principle, while ensuring that it reflected modern society.

Although there is currently only one prototype in production, mass production might be achieved if the project wins the Dyson Prize.
