President Anjuman Tajran Urdu Bazar and President Anjuman Tajran All Pakistan Khalid Pervaiz while talking to Independent Urdu said that the government has imposed 14% GST on stationery items which is not acceptable to the traders.
At this time, the Urdu market is already declining, people have no business, they are worried, and in the face of this problem, a sword of sales tax has been hung on them.
They said that this tax should not be on small shopkeepers, retailers or stationery in wholesale as these are the daily needs of school going children.
He said that this tax will be imposed on the industry, then he will collect it from the wholesaler and keep his profit on it, which further increases the price, then the wholesaler will make it expensive for the retailer.
“When the retailer sells it, all this tax will have to be paid by the child who can’t buy already who is sitting on the ground, this tax will be a burden on poor parents and students and this tax will close the doors of education.” More likely will increase.’
Lahore Urdu Bazaar is famous for books, paper and stationery items. There is a huge wholesale market for stationery here but nowadays it is not working like it used to.
The shopkeepers said that after the new General Sales Tax, they were getting stationery from the industry at high prices.
Faisal Mahmood is a wholesaler of stationery in Urdu Bazaar. Talking to Independent Urdu, he said that ‘Pencilrubber, sharpener, markers, color pencils, these are the things a child should take daily which means he will pay taxes daily.’
According to Faisal, there are many things in this tax which he does not understand like gum stick, fluid pen or files etc. which come in office stationery are not taxed.

Muzamil also does wholesale business of stationery in Urdu Bazaar. Speaking to Independent Urdu, he said that ‘since the tax imposed by the government, the customers come and go back after seeing the prices of stationery items because these things have become so expensive that the purchasing power has been lost. Muzamil said: ‘Earlier, a pencil was sold for 15 or 20 rupees in retail, but now the same pencil has become 30 rupees. Earlier the situation was bad and the government has imposed 14 percent more tax, now the market is not working.’
Muzamal while explaining the rates of stationery said about the price of a pack of 12 pencils, ‘Earlier the price of this pack was 160 rupees in wholesale, the minimum rate of which has now become 180 rupees. Now think how much I’ll sell it to a retailer and how much he’ll sell it to a kid?’
Speaking to Independent Urdu, Azhar, who sells stationery in retail, said that the GST imposed by the government will make stationery more expensive.
Azhar said that there are no customers in the market now because the children’s holidays are going on, but now when the schools open, the work of buying and selling stationery becomes more and for the retailers to keep the price reasonable. It will become difficult and education will become a dream for children.’
